Leading experts and tired folks around the world agree, a good night’s sleep is essential to our physical and mental wellbeing. When you sleep well, you wake up feeling refreshed and alert, ready to take on whatever the day brings.
Most of us spend about a third of our lives sleeping. For some, however, part of that time in bed is spent simply trying to get to sleep. Sometimes it feels like the brain goes into overdrive. Tossing and turning – and next thing you know your alarm is telling you it’s time to get up and face the day. Alongside poor sleep, stress seems to be a fact of life these days. For nearly half of all Canadians, Statistics Canada suggests that Covid-19 had a negative impact of their reported stress levels[1].
To better understand stress and how it affects our body, it’s important to differentiate between chronic stress and general stress. General stress is a normal response to situational pressures or demands, the result of brain chemicals called hormones surging through the body. A certain amount of stress is a normal part of daily life and can actually be beneficial – for example, motivating you to complete a task before an important deadline.
However, when stress persists for a prolonged period, it becomes what is known as “chronic stress”. Chronic stress is a response to long-term stressors, such as a negative work environment or a traumatic event. This type of stress can have a negative impact on a person’s physical and mental well-being[2].
So, What Can We Do?
The Sleep Foundation recommends managing stress to improve sleep and suggests a few ways to better manage stress[3]:
Consider Trying A Natural Health Product
There are several natural health products and adaptogens that can positively impact sleep – melatonin, valerian root, ashwagandha root and leaf among them. Ashwaganda root can positively impact stress as well. We encourage you to consult with your healthcare provider if you have specific questions about if a supplement could benefit you.
